New Inn Rangers 6 – Courtenay Rangers FC Reserves 2
So to the last game of the season!
With a heavily depleted side New Inn turned up to a wind swept and overcast pitch. With no Tony or Stretch, Dean took it upon himself to run the football side of matters (Pete had the finances well under control as usual!).
Dean opted for a change in the forward four, by putting Pete out on the right, Norris on the Left and Barlow with Gwendal up top. The logic was to have a really strong midfield with Barlow bringing his ‘training ground’ striking to the forward line.
All of this tactical genius counted for nothing however as the New Inn were gifted the first goal early in the first half. From a freekick outside the box Jamie Martin decided to float the ball back to their keeper. However, as their keeper had seen Jamie in a pair of tights at the weekend, he allowed the ball to slip straight through his hands. 1-0! Cue sheepish looks and general embarrassment! Good times!
From that point on New Inn looked quite comfortable with a couple of openings. But our old failings were creeping in to the game, lack of communication. Courtenay moved players around to try and confuse the New Inn and had a few efforts that might have had gone in on another day. Barlow and Norris switched positions as Dean couldn’t resist those baby blues begging for a stint up front and the boys kept plugging away and made it to half time still ahead.
Cue the team talk! Something stirred in the boys and after the break the New Inn were absolute class! Pete began to dominate his full-back and it changed the game. From his flick Norris bagged the first of his two and in what is now becoming a regular occurrence, Pete managed to score from the most ridiculous angle on the touchline! Two goals for Pete and his strongest team performance I’ve witnessed.
The work rate of the front four was superb, the back line getting to grips with the elusive ‘sunbed’ and Adam pulling off a fantastic one-on-one save. Gilbey again showed the discipline I wish he could display on a Saturday night out on the lash!
We conceded, but only when well out of sight. Dean wrapped up proceedings with a tidy finish.
The victory was a result of the last few weeks of the season, when everybody started to work as hard as they could. If we can take that forward we shouldn’t be in this position again.
Man of the match Pete.
